Your taste is personal.

This policy explains what Flix collects, why it is needed, who it is shared with, and the choices you have.

The short version

Flix uses your data to run and personalise the app.

We do not sell personal information for money. Advertising partners may use device or advertising identifiers for personalised ads where you allow it. You can control ad tracking and notifications, ask questions, and delete your account.

1. Who we are

Flix is a film and television discovery app provided by Charlie Horton (“Flix”, “we”, “us”). For privacy questions or requests, email charliehorton.dev@gmail.com.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account and profile: your name, username, email address, and country or region. We also keep sign-in and account-security records.
  • Preferences and activity: streaming-service choices, onboarding answers, likes and dislikes, favourites, watchlist entries, viewing dates, ratings, and the taste profile derived from those choices.
  • Social activity: friend requests, accepted friendships, and titles that match between friends. Your name and username can be found by other Flix users; friends can see the title activity needed to create shared matches.
  • Search content: film and TV searches and text entered into Describe It. Recent searches are also kept locally on your device for convenience.
  • Support messages: information you include when you email us for help or make a privacy request.

Information collected automatically

  • Device and technical data: platform, push-notification token, IP address, browser or app request details, diagnostics, and security logs needed to deliver and protect the service.
  • Advertising data: Google Mobile Ads may collect device and advertising identifiers, ad interactions, approximate location derived from an IP address, and diagnostics. On iOS, tracking is requested through App Tracking Transparency; consent options are also shown where required.
  • Purchase data: an account identifier and your Remove Ads entitlement or purchase status. Apple, Google, and RevenueCat process the transaction; Flix does not receive your full card or bank details.

Flix does not ask for precise location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone access, health information, or private messages.

3. How we use information

We use the information described above to:

  • create and secure your account, send sign-in codes, and keep you signed in;
  • save your library, viewing diary, ratings, preferences, and friendships;
  • personalise recommendations, taste insights, search results, and shared matches;
  • send friend and match notifications when you allow them;
  • show and measure ads, honour consent choices, and remove ads after purchase;
  • provide support, diagnose faults, prevent abuse, and improve reliability; and
  • meet legal obligations and enforce our rights.

Where UK or European data-protection law applies, our legal bases are performing our contract with you, your consent for optional tracking and notifications, our legitimate interests in securing and improving Flix, and compliance with law. You can withdraw consent at any time, without affecting earlier lawful processing.

4. Who receives information

We share only what is needed with the following recipients:

  • Google Mobile Ads: delivers and measures advertising and, when permitted, personalises it. See how Google uses data from partner services.
  • RevenueCat, Apple, and Google Play: process purchases and restore the Remove Ads entitlement.
  • Expo and platform push services: deliver the notifications you enable using a device push token and notification content.
  • OpenAI: converts text entered into Describe It into a numerical representation used to find matching titles. The text is sent for that request; it is not used by Flix to identify you.
  • TMDB and MDBList: provide film, television, watch-provider, and ratings data. Search terms or title identifiers may be sent to them, without your Flix account details.
  • Hosting, database, email, and operational providers: run the service, store data, send sign-in emails, and help us keep Flix reliable.
  • Other users: receive the profile and title-match information described above when you use Flix’s friend features.

We may also disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect users or the service, investigate fraud, or complete a business transfer. We use providers that are required to protect personal information to standards consistent with this policy and applicable law. Their own privacy notices also explain how they handle information within their services.

5. Retention and deletion

  • Account, library, taste, watch, and friendship data is generally kept while your account remains active or until you remove the relevant item.
  • Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes. Push tokens are removed when you sign out, delete your account, or when the push service reports that a token no longer works.
  • Standard search responses are cached for up to one hour. Describe It results may reuse a cached numerical representation for up to seven days; Flix keys that cache with a hash rather than storing the search text beside it.
  • Security logs, support correspondence, transaction evidence, and backups are kept only as long as reasonably needed for their purpose, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, legal obligations, and backup rotation.

When your Flix account is deleted, we delete the profile, active access tokens, sign-in records, friend relationships, push tokens, library, viewing history, ratings, and taste data associated with it. Limited information may remain temporarily in backups or be retained where law requires it. App-store and RevenueCat transaction records are controlled separately by those providers.

Visit Account deletion to make a request without reinstalling the app.

6. Your choices and rights

  • Decline or change ad-tracking permission in your device privacy settings.
  • Change personalised-ad consent when the Google consent controls are available.
  • Turn push notifications off in your device settings.
  • Remove library items and friendships within Flix.
  • Request access, correction, export, restriction, objection, or deletion by emailing us.

These rights depend on where you live. We may ask for enough information to verify that a request relates to your account. You can also complain to your local data-protection authority; in the UK, this is the Information Commissioner’s Office.

7. Security and international transfers

We use access controls, encrypted network connections, hashed one-time codes, limited access tokens, and other reasonable technical and organisational safeguards. No online service can guarantee absolute security.

Flix and its providers may process information in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where required, we rely on recognised transfer mechanisms and contractual or other safeguards designed to protect that data.

8. Children

Flix is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us so we can investigate and delete it.

9. Changes and contact

We may update this policy as Flix or the law changes. We will update the effective date above and provide additional notice in the app when a change materially affects your rights or how personal information is used.
